Titleist brand ambassador and PGA Tour winner Arron Oberholser recently stopped by the Putter Studio to meet with Scotty. He is a meticulous player who is constantly refining his game and always looking for an advantage. He had a few ideas for a new putter and asked Scotty to apply his craftsmanship and expertise.
What they landed upon was a modified Circa '62 No. 6. Arron likes the mechanical look but thought his eye could benefit from a notch in the rounded flange, in effect nearly "squaring off" the look. Scotty got to work on the mill to make the notch, and then started with the blending and shaping necessary to bring all the curves and lines together.
The interesting thing about modifying a design is that the player may just see the notch as the new feature. Scotty sees everything. The way the notch now makes the curve of the toe look different. The way the entire plan shape, or topline view, of the putter now needs to be made proportionate.
Throughout their hour-long design and grind session, Arron and Scotty were trading jokes, catching up on old stories, and having a great time working. Of course, for these two passionate students of the game "working" is a relative term. They were having a great time coming up with something new that could be put to use toward winning another title on the PGA Tour.
Arron also took a look at some other putters, including a Tour Newport 2 in a triple black finish, as well as a new Circa '62 No. 3 GSS.
